How to Maximize Engagement on Your Website

One of the biggest things that website owners struggle with is engaging visitors. These days, it’s no longer enough just to have good content (although yes, content is still king!). If you feel like you’ve tried everything to get your users invested and involved on your site, but you still aren’t having much luck, there may be some things you’ve overlooked.

When you’re looking for inspiration or ways to get people to engage with you on your website, you’ll often see this “tried and true” piece of advice: Give something away for free!

And while it’s true that giving something away can increase engagement, it is by no means the only thing that gets visitors involved and interacting with you and your website. Here are a few more ideas that won’t cost you anything extra to create, and will definitely get your users talking, sharing and communicating with you and each other.

Pop-ups with a Discount or Download

This is an easy way to get users who are still “on the fence” about ordering to take action. A simple pop-up with a discount offer is like the icing on the cake. Nothing extra to do, just enter a coupon code or click a button to apply it, and you’ve instantly built up that interaction that can nudge the conversion needle and help create a great customer experience (as well as increase the likelihood for future orders). If a discount isn’t going to cut it, consider giving away an informational white paper download that is triggered when they enter their email.

Abandoned Cart Emails

This is a simple step that many sites don’t do, either because it seems like a lot of work to set up (it really isn’t), or they’re not sure what to say. But abandoned cart emails are easy to implement and can do a great deal to remind users about items they may have added to their carts and forgotten about or left for later. You can also combine this with a discount or another tactic, like instilling urgency (i.e. Only 4 left!) to encourage an order. Check with your CMS (WordPress, Shopify, BigCommerce, etc) and the most highly reviewed plugin to get this implemented.

Monthly Newsletters

Monthly newsletters, like all the content on your website, should be interesting and full of value. A recap of new products or styles, suggestions for how to get the most use out of your product/service, press sighting on a digital magazine, an upcoming event you’ll be involved in, etc can continue to deliver value and bring your brand personality to life. This also helps to keep your business top of find for customers (hello referrals!).

Increasing Engagement and Keeping Users Happy

These are just a few of the many ways to increase engagement without a huge outlay of time or giving away the store to get users to act. It’s important to remember that whatever action you take, users will become accustomed to it and over time, associate your brand with that level of quality interaction.
